2 goals in the final 2 minutes of regulation give the Cargo the 2-1 Western Conference Semi-Final Win over Santa Clarita Blue Heat FC
Stockton- Al Michales may have asked it first, but tonight, the Stockton Cargo are asking, do you believe in miracles? Down 1-0 in the 88th minute, a goal from Vanessa Penuna and two minutes later, a banger of a goal from Sam Tristan, gave the Stockton Cargo the improbable 2-1 victory over the 3-time Nation Champion Santa Clarita Blue Heat FC in the Western Conference Semi-Final held at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton.
Cargo dominated play in the 2nd half, and appeared to go ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute off a header from Vanessa Penuna that was, as replays would show, erroneously called off sides.
After a 0-0 first half, the Cargo again dominated play, but the Blue Heat drew a dubious penalty as the Head Referee called Cargo Goalkeeper Amanda Leal for a penalty in the box although she was clearly playing for control of the ball. Kendall Campbell converted the PK to give the Blue Heat the 1-0 advantage in the 69th minute, and as the game wore on, the Blue Heat appeared headed to victory, or so they thought.
In the 88th minute, Marlee Cavitt drove down the right sideline and lofted in a centering pass that found the end of Vanessa Penuna’s right foot. She calmly slotted home the tying score, as the Cargo continued to press for the game clinching goal. Then, in the 90th minute, Same Tristan found a little space and sent in a banger of a shot into the top right corner of the goal to give the Cargo the improbably 2-1 victory and send Stockton into Sunday’s Western Conference Semi-Final!
Sunday’s Western Conference Semi-Final has Stockton Facing Utah United, kicking off at 7:30pm at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton.
